In Greg Natale's recent London residential project, five custom hand knotted rugs became the foundation of an open plan interior, bringing together colour, pattern and artistry through a collaboration that spans almost two decades. Rather than treating rugs as a finishing touch, Natale incorporated them from the earliest stages of the design process. The five bespoke pieces anchor the home, connecting marble, furnishings and architectural details into a cohesive, distinctly Natale interior.
Greg Natale's relationship with Designer Rugs began in 2009 with his first collection for the brand. Over the years, the partnership has evolved into a trusted creative collaboration that remains central to his design process.
As Natale explains, Designer Rugs has become "an extension of my studio" - a creative partner he relies on across projects for its craftsmanship, flexibility and customisation capabilities.
For this London residence, Natale selected pieces from his own Designer Rugs collections, tailoring each design in colour and scale to suit the home. The result is an interior that reflects his signature aesthetic while demonstrating the value of a long-standing partnership built on shared design vision and attention to detail.
The rugs were among the first design decisions. "From the beginning, the rugs became a starting point for the project," says Natale. "We conceived the spaces to include them and complement the selected furnishings."
This approach allowed the rugs to influence furniture placement, colour palettes and the overall composition of each room. Rather than simply completing the interiors, they helped define them.
Each rug was tailored in colour and scale to suit its setting. By adjusting proportions and palettes, Natale ensured every piece strengthened the room's composition while responding to surrounding materials.
Custom colourways draw connections to marble surfaces, upholstery and natural stone finishes, creating a layered and balanced interior. This ability to customise remains central to Designer Rugs' enduring appeal among designers.
To achieve a more open living environment, Natale removed internal doors, creating seamless connections between spaces. The challenge of defining individual zones was resolved through the strategic use of rugs.
Acting as visual anchors, the pieces establish dining and living areas without interrupting flow. They echo colours found throughout the interior while introducing pattern and texture that add depth and interest.
