Tamika Grant-Iramu is a Meanjin/Brisbane-based artist who incorporates organic patterns and imagery though the medium of relief print carving techniques. Tamika’s practice focuses on native and introduced flora, and highlights the minute details in nature that are so often unnoticed.

Through her creative practice, Tamika explores her identity, seeking ways to connect with the different threads of her Papua New Guinean, European and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Tamika’s unique artistic style brings together diverse communities of people, and through this collection aims to highlight the rug as the celebratory heart of a gathering.

“Propagation” describes the variety of flora found within the inner-city botanical gardens of Meanjin/Brisbane. Tamika uses repeated lines to create a design that allows one plant (one story) to finish as another plant begins its new story. The narratives within this design highlight the complexities of nature and evoke the way individual city dwellers live, converse and interact with each other within the presence of nature, art and design.

“Native Resonances” depicts the Eucalyptus in its design, highlighting an iconic tree that resonates throughout the Australian landscape. The Eucalyptus may draw a sense of nostalgia – the feeling of air currents flowing through their branches, with memories of the lightning-filled skies of summer storms. The tearing of bark shows the history of each individual tree as it sheds its past experiences.

“Complex Ecologies” reflects the diverse sub-tropical plant life that is seen in various botanical gardens across inner-city Meanjin/Brisbane. The design heroes the Frangipani tree as it merges in and out of intricate patterns found in the garden beds below. The continuous change and growth seen in the patterns reflects our urban botanical landscape, a shared space that is transient, offering solitude and connection with nature, or a place to meet and connect with others.

“Changing Seasons” celebrates the Jacaranda and Royal Poinciana trees. These trees, with contrasting coloured flowers, blanket the city in blooms of purple and red during the spring/early summer respectively, evoking anticipation for the peak summer season.
