Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales founded Romance Was Born in 2005 and quickly became known for their exceptional design acumen and storytelling vision. Plunkett and Sales’ designs have a strong relationship between art and design as they seek to provoke an emotional response and tell a story through their craft.
Designer Rugs’ Romance Was Born collection is fantastical, visionary and not for the faint at heart, unleashing wondrous imagery, kaleidoscopic colours and chimerical style drawn from their print archives. The four resulting rugs in the collection are as vibrant and imaginative as the rest of their work.
PINK EYE is a special collaboration between Romance Was Born, Designer Rugs and Archibald prize winning artist Del Kathryn Barton for their Rainbows Edge Collection in 2018. Our interpretation of Del’s eye motif is a bold and colourful nod to fashion and art.

Del Kathryn Barton is an Australian artist and winner of two Archibald prizes. Barton’s decorative, highly detailed paintings are known for their vibrant, figurative imagery – combining traditional painting techniques with contemporary design and illustrative styles. Recent auctions of Barton’s work has seen her become the first woman to enter an elite echelon of Australia's top 10-selling living artists, which includes Charles Blackman and John Olsen.
After the success of ‘Pink Eye’, a joint collaboration between Barton, Designer Rugs and Romance Was Born, the relationship continued with ‘Code Fluff’. The first edition made its debut at Sydney Contemporary in 2018, with only 10 editions made. The design takes a portion of detail from one of Barton’s kaleidoscopic paintings, and creates an incredibly intricate and detailed hand tufted rug that appears almost glistening and alive.
