DESIGNER RUGS PRESENTS: THE RUG PROJECT

SEVEN OF AUSTRALIA'S MOST INNOVATIVE ARTISTS JOIN FORCES WITH DESIGNER RUGS TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY AND SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS.

Designer Rugs together with Virginia Wilson has invited seven of Australia's leading contemporary artists to create single edition wall and floor rugs that both extend their art practice and broaden the style of rugs produced by Designer Rugs, for a live charity auction in August.

Artists were selected by a committee consisting of Christine Morrow - curator, Museum of Contemporary Art; David Clark - editor, Vogue Living; Ewen McDonald - Museum of Contemporary Art; Paul Flynn - editor, Artist Profile; Sue Cato - director, Cato Counsel and a director of the Museum of Contemporary Art; Virginia Wilson - Virginia Wilson Art and Yosi Tal - managing director, Designer Rugs.

Artists in The Rug Project are:

Shaun Gladwell (recently selected to represent Australia for the next Venice Bienniale)
Newell Harry
Clinton Nain
Hossein Valamanesh
Justin Trendall
Kirsteen Pieterse
Gemma Smith

The rugs were auctioned live at an invitation only event on the 27^th August 2008 at b2 Studios Alexandria, Sydney.

Paul Sumner of Mossgreen will be the auctioneer and David Clark, editor of Vogue Living will be the MC for the evening.

The Rug Project linked the visual arts community with the business community to raise much needed funds for Australian Charities. This project would not be possible without the support of the corporate sector and the visual arts community including principal sponsors Gadens Lawyers, Principle Advisory Services, Blacksheep Productions, b2 Studios and Vogue Living Magazine and Katering.

The total monies raised from this charity auction was $51,000.

100% of the proceeds from the auction will go to nominated charities including Cure the Future (The Cell and Gene Trust) and the Stephen Sanig Research Institute.
